The Ed Askew album, “My Heart Starts Beating”
It is with the greatest amount of pride that we present this magnificent, mystical collection by this timeless artist. From his earliest days at ESP-Disk, he’s achieved a stature in the music community as an “outsider”, and an artist without compromise. These songs will make you sad, happy, frightened and full of wonder for all that the human condition can bring. This is a collection of love songs like no other. I couldn’t be more humbled and honored to have Ed Askew here at WildCat Records. He is the embodiment of what we try to do for the Art in which we both so deeply believe, not to mention, a beautiful human being with a heart as large as the Universe. “My Heart Starts Beating” is by far, my favorite album of the last year, and the biggest surprise I’ve heard in decades. – Joe Phillips
ARTIST NOTE ON THE SELECTIONS
A TRAIN FROM THE FUTURE
Perhaps you are lucky. You meet someone on line. A serious person. A talented person. A friend. “The touch of your song on my mind brings me faith.. ” you will meet this person some day perhaps: perhaps not. One has no regrets.
MOON IN THE MIND
What can I say? There are too many unhappy young people in America. Kids with everything, apparently. But who cares? Who treats them with respect? Who is actually interested?
I know someone who had been regularly beat up by his Dad since he was a young boy. This is the reason I know about such things. Do you know what such treatment does to the mind of a child? Not to mention the sort of disruption it causes to the lives of everyone involved. I didn’t coat this song in pity. I made this song as stark as I could. Because I wish to communicate what I have learned. (Harpsichord and toy piano etc.)
I made this song with the help of Eoin Flaherity (DJ Wak). Eoin is a maker of Techno music who has occasionally helped me in my work.
A friendship with a boy. Yet there is something sad here. Thoughts of mortality enter the mind of the old man.
Perhaps I am thinking of Hadrian and Antinous. When the young man drowned the great emperor went completely to pieces. There are statues of the boy all over Europe. Most of them in the Vatican. The song was written in the late 1970s.
RAINDROPS & WHISTLES
Lost love. Hold your candle carefully.
William Blake’s poem.
I had pretty much completed the music when I thought If I read some Blake it might help me think of some words for the song. Well, TYGER fit perfectly.
Recorded maybe 3 years ago using Reason software. I’m not actually playing. I constructed a sequence of tones, which I imported to Pro Tools.
THE KINGS OF THIS WORLD
The character who sings this song is an old guy who likes to shock people.
He knows if he said “I slept all night with a girl” no one would even notice. Not that he doesn’t love his young boyfriend.
HOW ROSIE GOT JOE
Love in the financial district.
A shaker…and I’m hitting a beer bottle. One is always handy.
The piano is improvised.
ON CHRISTMAS MORNING
Recorded Christmas 07. Harmonium etc.
Off balance, yet never loses it’s balance.
MY HEART STARTS BEATING
Made for another online friend I like to chat with.
Not, strictly speaking, a love song. But, for someone I am fond of. (Harpsichord)
