Shane Murphy / portrait of a demolition

The new album has arrived... the highly awaited sequel to "Open Hearth", this is Shane Murphy's 3rd masterpiece of what we can only describe as "poetic folk art rock". Let it take you to a special place in your mind, and your soul...
With our deepest thanks to Kira LaRose, for another timeless painting, DawnMarie Allan, for a haunting backing vocal of atmospheric perfection, Jerry Short of Crooked Cove, for his expert handling of all aspects of our manufacturing and printing and Winnie Yip, of New York City, for her printing graphics magnificence. Shane Murphy / Open Hearth

"Shane Murphy (b. 1986) is an early riser, a quiet observer, a student of Spanish literature, mostly an agreeable companion. He makes the music of a modern minstrel, drawing equally from the foreign and the intimately known. Raised in rural Northern New York, between the St. Lawrence River Valley and the Adirondack Mountains, his music demonstrates a reverence for the natural landscape, without ignoring the culture of urban life and urban decay. A tenor that rises and falls in a manner reminiscent of Tim Buckley, with lyrics evidently influenced by the poetry of Whitman, Frost and W.S. Merwin, he is fully capable both of lifting you up and breaking your heart."

The magnificent new album from a brilliant new artist! Crafted with love.
Sheer poetry and beauty. The CD release concert/party in Manhattan was an amazing evening! Our sincere thanks to all who braved one of the worst New York City storms in recent history.

SHANE MURPHY *****
Open Hearth
WildCat Recording
Take notice of this: he's a phenomenon! Shane Murphy is not yet 25 and, with Open Hearth, his second album, he shows an outsized talent. One track, I Wonder As I Wander, which opened A WildCat Christmas 2010, was enough to convince me, but this album is more tan a confirmation, it's a tsunami. Those who knew and loved young Tim Buckley in his glory days can have an idea of Shane's voice. Others will just have to forget everything they knew. In a perfect (musical) world, this disc would surely make Shane Murphy a worldwide star. He's a singer (but not only a singer) as we meet only one in a decade (and not every decade). In our mercenary era, things are different, but dreaming is not forbidden. To convince you, as my words are too poor to describe what I feel, I have some deciding factors. First I invite you to go to Shane's bandcamp (http://shanemurphy.bandcamp.com) where the artist offers from time to time tracks you can download for free (original compositions as well as covers like These Days by Jackson Browne. Then, I suggest you to discover the WildCat Recording label, courtesy of the excellent Joe Phillips (who produces Open Hearth); you'll only find rare artists, people that Joe loves not only for what they do, but also for what they are (and, of course, without caring of the profitability: artists, not products). It's a conception of business seldom met today, an attitude we can only feel like encouraging. I may also tell you about the cover (the only one on the CD) of Another Time by Tom Rapp (Pearls Before Swine), a track that should not have been part of the album. A reviewer, after a concert, had compared Shane's arrangements to those of PBS (unknown to Shane at the time). Shane listened to the track, recorded it and sent it to Joe Phillips, asking him to transmit it to Tom Rapp; Tom appreciated it and now, you can listen to this outstanding version of Another Time. I could also tell you that Shane Murphy is a huge and creative artist, who is already, at the time of Open Hearth's release, at least three albums ahead. I could tell you about the disc, or try to, about the voice and its restrained power, about the arrangements; soberly magnificent (by the way, Shane plays and sings alone on the album). I could, for sure, but I don't know how to do it without drying the catalog of superlatives. Some tried, but they encountered many problems! Phenomenal, that's what I told you!
